Out in the open, where no one was around, I gently stretched both hands toward the sky. The wind slipped through my fingers, and my sleeves fluttered down. Not as “I,” but as “me,” I simply looked straight up. Just doing that made me feel strangely free. When I stood on tiptoe, my heart felt a little lighter. It was as if the invisible bonds holding me back had suddenly snapped. The clear winter sky stretches endlessly high, and my small palms, of course, can’t grasp anything. But for the first time, I found myself thinking that I like the fact that I’m trying to reach out. Under this sky, I am myself. Just that alone makes today a little special.
